Faux-minism & #MeToo

“I would suggest that a feminism which does not also seek to alter the exploitation of poorer women is not feminism at all, but is simply a variant for of upper-class politics & self-privileging.”
Kendra Wells on #MeToo (I'm Tired of Performing Trauma)

How beautiful is it that "women are now being heard."
That the sexual abuse that women, and men, have had to endure for years upon years is finally being brought to light, and all we needed was a few creepy celebrities to get the job done.

No, the years and years of staggering statistics and research on women that have experienced sexual assault in America (1 out of 6), didn't do it.

All we needed was some men with big names to get messy with the wrong one, and *boom* we got ourselves a revolution.
All we needed was for news stations, blogs, websites, corporations, etc. to realize that they can actually create some serious traffic and make some serious cash from this whole sexual assault thing.

Do I "support" the #MeToo movement? Uh, sure, why not.
Do I believe that it is extremely elitist? Yes, absolutely, without a doubt.
Do I believe that politicians and celebrities are eating up this movement and spitting it out to contribute more to "we have the moral high ground!" liberal propaganda mumbo-jumbo? Without a doubt.

I wish that we could have said #MeToo when Uncle "Joe"  was raping every woman and girl in the family and walking around our communities as a free man to cause more harm.
I wish that we could have said #MeToo when it was brought to light that millions of young women are being sexually assaulted on college campuses on a regular.
I wish we could have said #MeToo before politicians realized that they could exploit sexual assault.

I wish the #MeToo movement meant anything for women who are not being raped by celebrities or men in power. I wish that I had any glimpse of hope that the #MeToo movement is more than another fad or phase, and that it would have the same benefits for those who are just every day American citizens.

You see, sexual assault is not a left or right issue. It is an issue- and how disgusting is it that there are people in this world, using sexual assault as a way to win votes, fans, followers, customers, etc. There are just some things that do not need to be politicized.

So, it's nice to be able to say #MeToo, sure.
The problem is the majority do not care unless it's a good, profitable,
story.

MOTS
